This artsy, laid-back hostel is nestled right in the heart of Copenhagen, just between Christiansborg Palace and Tivoli Gardens. In addition to its enviable location, Copenhagen Downtown Hostel boasts highly sociable communal areas and complimentary meals.
The hostel has a selection of simple yet comfortable private, family, and shared dormitory-style rooms. Whilst most accommodations require guests to use shared bathrooms, some private bedrooms have en-suite facilities.
Guests can read, chat and play pool and fussball in the spacious lounge and relaxing chill-out areas. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the property and iPads can be rented for free from reception.
All-you-can-eat breakfast buffets are served daily in the on-site café of Copenhagen Downtown Hostel. Happy hours, live music acts and late nights are commonplace in the lively on-site bar.
Copenhagen Central Station is a ten-minute walk away.
Getting a free meal is of course a huge bonus as trying to keep to a budget in super-expensive Scandinavia is rarely easy. The typical serving of potatoes, pork roast, gravy, pickled cabbage, and almond rice pudding is a pretty good belly-filler too!
Lounge area has a bed in it...
...So you can relax and take a load off before and after checking-in/out. Surely every hostel should follow the Downtown's lead in this respect..?
Public areas are very convivial.
The chill-out areas, bar/lounge, kitchen, café and even the pavement outside are all top-notch places to take some time out, unwind and meet people.
Some bedrooms are blighted by noise. Some bedrooms are blighted by noise.
As well as being closer to the lively bar, the guest bedrooms at the front of the building often provide front row access to people chatting, singing and arguing on the street 'till late and collection trucks collecting bottles at dawn.
Free Wi-Fi is pretty slow.
A hostel this large (365 beds/88 rooms) invariably has lots of people wanting to get online at the same time. Unfortunately, the Downtown's current Wi-Fi set-up isn't able to cope with such demands so you can expect plenty of 'lagging' throughout the day.
Prolonged wait at reception.
This is because the staff have to serve at the bar and man reception at the same time. Needless to say, trying to check-in or amend a booking during happy hour isn't advised...
