In the November of 1868 in the sleeping Cheyenne village that is nestled along the Washita River the Peace Chief Black Kettle was attacked by the 7th Cavalry led by Lt. Col. George Custer. It part of a cycle of events starting with the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 in Colorado. The park headquarters are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for Christmas Day and January 1. The overlook and trail are open everyday from dawn to dusk. There is a trailhead (trail is about 1 1/2 miles in length) historical monument and engraved panel to explain the route of the 7th Cavalry and the general battle. There is a 27 minute film that is shown upon request. There are no fees to enter or use the park. The visitor center provides views of the national historic site and the Black Kettle National Grassland.
