About Hotel Elephant Safari Park Lodge

The Hotel Elephant Safari Park Lodge is not a hotel, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience - or more if you are lucky. In the depths of the Elephant Safari Park in Taro, Bali, guests can watch, ride and feed 30 endangered Sumatran elephants. The 25 en-suite rooms and suites have balconies with views over the stunning grounds and, of course, the elephants. Equipped with timber “elephant footed” canvas beds, the rooms are all decorated in an elephant theme. Once at the Hotel Elephant Safari Park Lodge, guests can embark on elephant safaris, work out in the gym, take a massage or treat themselves to a spa treatment. Buffet diners and fine-dining is available on site, with a gourmet breakfast included in the Lakeside restaurant, where the elephants can be watched bathing. White-water rafting, kayaking, trekking or mountain-biking can be arranged locally. The lodge is 42 km away from Ngurah Rai International Airport.

sites

This unique lodge offers an unparalleled immersive experience, with its signature feature being the direct and close elephant interactions. Guests can wake up to the sight of elephants from their rooms and even enjoy an elephant chauffeur service to dinner, creating truly unforgettable memories. The lodge is highly praised for its cleanliness and the attentive staff who facilitate these unique encounters. It is an ideal destination for families seeking engaging animal experiences, couples on a honeymoon looking for a memorable and distinctive stay, and animal lovers interested in close, hands-on interaction with these majestic creatures. To fully embrace the unique offerings, consider an overnight stay to enjoy activities like the elephant dinner rides, and be aware that the lodge is situated in a remote location.

Facilities & Amenities
The lodge provides a range of facilities designed to enhance the guest experience. There is a museum offering interesting facts and historical photos, and a small art gallery that guests found fascinating. For relaxation, a spa is available by appointment, and a large gift shop features elephant-themed items, including highly praised chocolate. While the Wi-Fi was generally available, some guests reported issues with connectivity. The pool is modest in size and reserved for human guests, though its cleanliness received mixed feedback. Beyond elephants, the grounds are home to other animals like tortoises, giant fish, and peacocks. The overall property is described as beautifully maintained, with lush gardens and clean walkways. Guests also appreciate the convenience of a buggy service for transport around the expansive lodge grounds.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Guests consistently commend the exceptional cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Rooms are described as pristine, spacious, and well-maintained, offering a luxurious stay. The comfortable beds and high-quality linens ensure a restful night's sleep, complemented by spacious bathrooms that are often equipped with modern fixtures. In-room amenities are plentiful, including daily deliveries of fresh fruits, evening chocolates or cakes, and a generous supply of unlimited water and toiletries. Guests also appreciate the provision of fresh towels, bath robes, a coffee maker, kettle, and a safe for valuables. The air conditioning is effective, and many rooms feature a balcony offering direct views of the elephants. While some guests noted cicada noise or minor issues with soundproofing, and a few experienced slippery paths during rainy seasons, the overall room experience is highly positive.

Dining & Food Quality
The lodge offers a variety of dining options, with the main restaurant receiving praise for its superb and delicious offerings. Breakfast is typically served buffet-style, described as extensive and varied, though some guests found the options limited or the service slow for à la carte orders. Lunch buffets are also available, generally considered good quality. Dinner is a highlight for many, often enjoyed in a romantic setting under the stars, with the unique experience of an elephant chauffeur to the dining area. The cafe and bar areas provide additional choices, with the bar serving good cocktails. While the chocolate from the gift shop is highly recommended, and some specific dishes like onion rings received rave reviews, some guests found the overall menu options to be limited for longer stays, leading to repetition. A few also noted that the afternoon tea was disappointing and that wine could be expensive.

Location & Accessibility
The lodge's remote location is a defining characteristic, nestled within a lush jungle environment that provides a peaceful and tranquil escape. A major draw is the immediate proximity to the elephants, with many rooms offering direct views of the animals from their balconies. The lodge provides a reliable driver service for guest transport, which is appreciated given the secluded setting. A shuttle to Ubud is also available, though the journey can take around 40 minutes. While the serene environment is a significant advantage, guests should be aware that the lodge is quite far from other popular tourist areas, often requiring a two-hour drive from major cities. Some visitors also noted that the bumpy roads leading to the park could be challenging, and a few experienced issues with inaccurate directions from online maps.

Staff & Service
The friendly staff at the lodge consistently receive high praise for their welcoming and helpful demeanor. Guests frequently highlight their attentiveness, professionalism, and warm hospitality, noting that staff often go above and beyond expectations. The quick check-in process contributes to a smooth arrival. Housekeeping is efficient, with rooms cleaned daily and thoughtful turn-down services including fruit plates and chocolates. The mahouts, or elephant handlers, are particularly commended for their kindness, caring approach, and deep bond with the elephants, often willing to take photos and videos for guests. While most experiences are positive, some guests reported instances of staff being less friendly if not tipped generously, or drivers exhibiting worrying behavior. Despite these isolated incidents, the overall consensus is that the staff's dedication significantly enhances the guest experience.

Additional Information
A significant and often debated aspect of the lodge experience revolves around elephant welfare. Many guests are reassured by the park's rescue efforts, noting that the elephants were saved from harsh conditions and now live longer, healthier lives within the park. The successful breeding program, which has seen several baby elephants born, is cited as evidence of the animals' well-being. Proponents argue that activities like elephant rides and elephant bathing are beneficial for the animals' exercise and mental stimulation, and that the park is regularly audited for animal care. However, a notable number of guests express concern, observing chained elephants (especially at night), the use of bullhooks by handlers, and what they perceive as forced tricks. These guests feel that the park, despite its claims, does not operate as a true sanctuary, and that such interactions are exploitative, causing sadness or distress to the animals. The unique elephant chauffeur service to dinner is a highlight for many, offering a memorable and distinctive experience.
