About Town Hall Inn

The Town Hall Inn is a boutique hotel / B&B located just five minutes - yet a world away - from Deadwood, SD. The property is conveniently situated just 17-18 miles from both Sturgis and Spearfish, and is about five miles from Ski Mystic Deer Mountain and Terry Peak. You will be right in the middle of all the action and adventure that the Black Hills have to offer. Lead’s Town Hall building was constructed in 1912 and served this function through 1938. This ornate building originally housed many town functions, including the mayor’s and treasurer’s offices, the court room, jail, and judge’s chambers - the gallows were located directly behind the building. The Homestake Mining Company housed their general offices here for nearly 50 years, and the building now is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Relax; enjoy a comfortable stay and a light continental breakfast.

Reviews summary

This AI-generated summary was based on reviews from multiple
sites

The hotel offers a distinctive experience, standing out as a historic Town Hall beautifully converted into an inn, where each room boasts a unique character and original architectural features, providing an "old world" feel with modern comforts. This charming establishment is consistently praised for its exceptional cleanliness, comfortable accommodations, and the warm, attentive service provided by its staff, who often make guests feel like family. It serves as an ideal retreat for history enthusiasts and couples seeking a unique and peaceful getaway, as well as road trippers and travelers looking for a quiet base from which to explore the Black Hills region. To ensure a restful stay, guests are advised to consider requesting a room located away from the main street to minimize potential noise, and those with mobility concerns should note the presence of a long staircase to upper floors as there is no elevator.

Facilities & Amenities
Guests appreciate the blend of historic charm with modern conveniences. The hotel provides free Wi-Fi throughout, ensuring connectivity. Many rooms are equipped with a mini-fridge and microwave, and some even feature a convenient in-room ice maker. Access to the building and individual rooms is streamlined through electronic key code locks, eliminating the need for traditional keys or cards. While the building's historic nature means there is no elevator, guests should be prepared for a long and fairly steep staircase to the second floor. Free parking is available at the rear of the building, though it requires navigating a hill. A notable feature is the on-site brew pub located in the basement, which many guests enjoy. Some visitors noted the absence of a central ice machine, though staff were often able to provide ice upon request.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
The hotel consistently receives high praise for its exceptional cleanliness, with guests frequently describing rooms as spotless and well-maintained. Rooms are generally spacious, featuring impressive high ceilings and unique decor that reflects the building's historic past, with each room offering a distinct theme. Guests report very comfortable beds and freshly laundered linens, contributing to a restful night's sleep. The modern bathrooms are appreciated, often equipped with heat lamps and providing good water pressure in the showers, though some found the sink water pressure less consistent. While many enjoy the quiet atmosphere, some ground-floor rooms facing the street or near the lobby can experience street noise or lobby noise. Heating can be a concern in colder months, with some guests noting noisy radiators and the need for supplemental electric heaters to adequately warm the room. A few guests also reported issues with bugs in their rooms and occasionally dirty windows.

Dining & Food Quality
The hotel offers a continental breakfast that is generally described as adequate and convenient, providing a simple start to the day. Guests appreciate the availability of hot coffee, which is often praised for its quality. The breakfast spread typically includes items such as fruit, juice, yogurt, bagels, and various muffins, with some guests highlighting the deliciousness of the banana nut muffins. However, feedback on the breakfast is mixed; some guests found the selection to be minimalist and lacking variety, noting the absence of milk for oatmeal, butter or jam for bread, and only powdered creamer. There is a small seating area for breakfast, often limited to a single table in the entrance hall, which sometimes necessitates guests taking their food back to their rooms.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts a highly advantageous central location in Lead, situated directly on Main Street and conveniently across from the open-cut gold mine and a small park. This prime position allows guests walkable access to local restaurants and shops. Its proximity to Deadwood, just a few minutes' drive away, is a significant draw, offering a quieter alternative to the bustling town while still providing easy access to its attractions. The hotel also serves as an excellent base for exploring other popular Black Hills destinations, including Terry Peak, Mount Rushmore, Custer, and Spearfish. While free parking is available at the back of the inn, guests should be aware that accessing it involves navigating a hill, and front-facing rooms may experience some street noise.

Staff & Service
The staff at the hotel consistently receive high praise for their exceptional friendliness and helpfulness, with many guests feeling welcomed like family. Reviewers frequently highlight the staff's attentiveness and willingness to go above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay, including accommodating requests and providing local recommendations. The check-in process is noted as easy and efficient, largely due to the use of text-messaged key codes for building and room access, which also contributes to a sense of privacy. Communication from the staff is generally excellent, with proactive messages about room readiness. While the hotel operates without a traditional front desk, staff are often available and responsive, though one isolated review mentioned a negative experience with a staff member regarding a booking issue.

Additional Information
A unique aspect of the hotel is its approach to room identification, with each room bearing a distinct name (such as "Judge's Chamber" or "Engineer's Office") reflecting its original function within the historic Town Hall building, rather than a number, adding to its charm and character. The hotel operates on a self check-in system using key codes texted to guests, which is generally found to be convenient and provides a sense of privacy, though it means there is no traditional manned reception. Many rooms are equipped with a small in-room ice maker, a thoughtful amenity that guests appreciate. Guests frequently commend the new ownership for their dedication to hospitality and for maintaining the property's charm and cleanliness. The hotel also features a brew pub in the basement, offering a unique on-site entertainment option for guests.
