Review summary

This AI-generated summary was based on reviews from multiple
sites

The hotel is celebrated for its breathtaking views over Derwentwater and the surrounding mountains, complemented by an exceptional spa that offers a serene escape. Guests consistently highlight the hotel's spotless cleanliness, comfortable accommodations, and the generally attentive service provided by the staff. This makes it an ideal destination for couples seeking a romantic retreat, walkers and hikers eager to explore the scenic surroundings directly from the hotel, and relaxation seekers looking to unwind in a luxurious setting. The hotel also serves as a popular and well-regarded wedding venue. To enhance your stay, it is highly recommended to book spa sessions well in advance due to high demand, and consider requesting a lake-facing room to fully appreciate the stunning vistas.

Facilities & Amenities
The hotel boasts a highly praised spa as a standout feature, offering a luxurious experience with an infinity pool that provides stunning views, various saunas, steam rooms, and a relaxing thermal journey. Guests frequently commend the spa's overall quality, though it is important to note that access often incurs an additional cost and requires advance booking. The hotel also provides comfortable and inviting lounge areas and a bar, perfect for relaxation. Parking facilities are generally considered excellent and convenient for guests. While the Wi-Fi is available, some guests have reported occasional connectivity issues. It is worth noting that the hotel operates a cashless policy, which some visitors found inconvenient. Some minor issues with lifts being out of order or insufficient in number have been mentioned.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Guests generally find the hotel to be exceptionally clean throughout, with many rooms described as comfortable and well-appointed. The beds are frequently praised for their comfort, ensuring a restful night's sleep, though a few guests found them to be too firm. However, feedback on room condition is mixed; while some rooms are modern and luxurious, others are noted as being dated or small, with some reports of ripped wallpaper, cracked tiles, and signs of wear in the bathroom. Recurring concerns include noise levels from external sources such as kitchen fans or a noisy road, and occasional disturbances from neighbouring rooms. In-room amenities typically include coffee and tea facilities, bathrobes, and sometimes a fridge, but some guests have noted issues with poor shower pressure or a lack of certain toiletries.

Dining & Food Quality
The hotel offers diverse dining experiences, with the Mizu Pan-Asian restaurant frequently receiving high praise for its delicious and flavourful dishes, often described as a "taste sensation." The Brasserie also garners positive comments for its food quality. However, overall food quality receives mixed reviews; while many guests enjoy their meals, some describe dishes as "average," "bland," or "overpriced," with specific complaints about certain items like steak or ramen. Breakfast feedback is particularly varied, with some guests enjoying the plentiful options and quick service, while others report issues with cold food, poor presentation, or slow service. The bar areas are generally well-regarded for drinks and light bites, though some find the cocktails overpriced. Service in the restaurants can be inconsistent, with some staff being attentive and efficient, while others are perceived as disorganised or slow.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts a superb location with stunning views of Derwentwater and the surrounding mountains, making it a picturesque retreat. Its proximity allows for easy access to walks directly from the property, including routes around the lake and to nearby waterfalls. Guests appreciate the convenience of a bus stop directly outside the hotel, providing transport to nearby towns like Keswick, and the option of a ferry service for scenic travel. Parking facilities are consistently praised as excellent and convenient for guests arriving by car. While the location is generally peaceful, some rooms at the rear of the hotel may experience noise from kitchen fans or be situated near a noisy road, which can impact the tranquility for some visitors.

Staff & Service
The hotel staff generally receive high commendation for their friendliness, helpfulness, and attentiveness, with many guests highlighting their welcoming and professional demeanor. The check-in process is often described as smooth and efficient, contributing to a positive first impression. Staff are frequently praised for going above and beyond, with their willingness to assist and accommodate requests significantly enhancing the guest experience. However, some reviews indicate inconsistencies in service, particularly within the dining areas, where some staff are perceived as disorganised or lacking in customer service skills, leading to issues like forgotten orders or slow service. A few guests have also reported instances of staff being unhelpful or dismissive when addressing complaints or specific requests, such as issues with room conditions or booking discrepancies, which can detract from an otherwise pleasant stay.

Additional Information
A frequently mentioned point is that spa access typically comes at an additional cost for hotel guests and requires advance booking, which some visitors find frustrating, especially if slots are unavailable. The hotel operates a cashless policy, meaning all payments must be made by card, a detail that some guests found inconvenient. While the hotel is generally dog-friendly, there are specific restricted areas for pets, such as the main bar and restaurant, with designated seating in the library or conservatory, which has disappointed some dog owners. The hotel is a popular wedding venue, and while the wedding team receives high praise, the associated events can sometimes lead to noise for other guests. Some guests have also reported difficulties with refunds or cancellations, particularly for pre-paid bookings.
