Review summary

This AI-generated summary was based on reviews from multiple
sites

This hotel is celebrated for its historic character and spacious rooms, offering a unique charm that appeals to guests seeking a traditional experience. Its pet-friendly policy makes it an excellent choice for pet owners, who appreciate the ability to bring their companions into various areas. The hotel is also well-suited for families due to its large rooms and amenities like cots and high chairs, and for golfers or whisky enthusiasts given its proximity to local courses and distilleries. While many guests praise the friendly staff and good food, some note that the property appears dated and could benefit from modernization. To ensure a comfortable stay, guests might consider requesting a room away from potential noise sources like the kitchen fan and being aware of the hotel's traditional aesthetic.

Facilities & Amenities
The hotel offers convenient on-site parking that is ample and easily accessible, which is a significant advantage for guests traveling by car. While the property does not feature modern amenities like a fitness center or swimming pool, it provides a comfortable bar and lounge area where guests can relax, and pets are often welcome. Most guests find the Wi-Fi to be functional, though some report it can be patchy or unavailable in certain areas, particularly on upper floors. Rooms are generally equipped with tea and coffee facilities and a television, though some note the TVs are small and old-fashioned. Guests should be aware that the hotel does not have an elevator, so stairs are necessary to access some rooms.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Guests frequently commend the hotel's cleanliness, describing rooms as spotless and well-maintained. The room size is consistently highlighted as a positive, with many appreciating the generous and spacious accommodations, often including a sofa or ample seating. However, feedback on bed comfort is mixed; while many find the beds very comfortable, a notable number of guests report issues with uncomfortable mattresses, visible springs, or two single beds pushed together. Bathroom facilities are often described as outdated, with common complaints about very low water pressure in showers, mold, damp smells, and a lack of modern fixtures. Some rooms also experience noise from adjacent rooms due to thin walls or from the gravel driveway, and a few mention issues with rooms being cold or windows leaking.

Dining & Food Quality
The hotel receives widespread praise for its breakfast, which is often described as excellent, delicious, and offering plenty of choice, including freshly cooked, made-to-order options and a continental buffet. Most guests enjoy the full cooked breakfast, though some have noted inconsistencies in preparation, such as overcooked items or limited content. Dinner in the restaurant is generally well-regarded for its quality and taste, with many finding the food to be of a very good standard and served in a pleasant, traditional setting. However, some guests feel that the dinner options can be overpriced or that the menu is somewhat limited, and a few have had less positive experiences with specific dishes like the Sunday roast. Vegetarian options are sometimes noted as being limited.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts a convenient location that is easily accessible from major roadways, making it a practical stop for travelers. It is particularly well-situated for those interested in local attractions, being a short drive from the Glenmorangie Distillery and within easy reach of the town, supermarket, and various pubs and shops. The ample parking is a consistent positive, providing ease for guests with vehicles. While the hotel's immediate surroundings are generally quiet, some guests have commented on the approach to the property, noting an uneven surface, a noisy gravel drive, or a somewhat scruffy appearance with overgrown foliage and an unappealing decking area at the front.

Staff & Service
The staff at the hotel consistently receive high praise for their friendliness, helpfulness, and attentiveness. Many guests highlight their willingness to go above and beyond to assist with queries, accommodate requests, and ensure a pleasant stay. The check-in process is generally described as quick and easy, though a few guests encountered initial issues with booking confirmations or an indifferent receptionist. The hotel's pet-friendly service is particularly appreciated, with staff making dogs feel very welcome. While the majority of interactions are positive, some guests have reported isolated instances of dower or unenthusiastic staff, and a few experienced issues with service during dining or housekeeping not being performed daily.

Additional Information
A notable aspect of the hotel is its pet-friendly policy, allowing dogs in various areas, including the bar, though a per-night fee applies. Many guests appreciate the hotel's historic charm and character, viewing it as a traditional property, but a significant number also point out that the building is dated and in need of modernization and general maintenance, with mentions of damp patches, peeling wallpaper, and a strong perfume smell. Some guests have been relocated to this hotel from a sister property due to ongoing renovations or boiler issues, a recurring situation. It is also worth noting that a service charge is applied to bills, which some guests have reported does not go directly to the staff.
