Radio Hotel is a budget option in the heart of Rome’s trendy Trastevere district, famous for both its streetlife and nightlife.
The rooms are comfortably furnished. Some have private bathrooms, while all have flat screen TV’s, work desks, fans and telephones. The rooms are on the seventh floor, and have great views over Rome.
The reception at the Radio Hotel is open 24 hours, as is the adjacent lounge and snack bar. Pets are allowed on application, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
Sweet or savoury breakfast is available every morning. For other meals you could try the snack bar, or one of the many great cafes or restaurants of Trastevere.
The hotel is mere steps from the Trastevere tram stop, from where tram #8 will take you into the heart of tourist Rome. The Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica are 2.6 miles away, while the Coliseum is just 2.1 miles.
Trastevere's railway station is right across the road, and the tram stop just a bit further. Guests found that it was very easy to get around Rome by public transport from this location. Also mentioned is that Trastevere itself, though not a big tourist spot, offers much of interest.
Excellent value for money
While all readily admit this is not the Ritz, most guests, on reflection, believed they had received excellent value. They had paid budget rates for a budget option, and were happy to be in a reasonably central and convenient neighbourhood.
Helpful and friendly staff
Despite the occasional issues many travellers have at the hotel, most do describe the staff as friendly, welcoming and willing to try to correct problems that arise.
A bit difficult to find
The Radio Roma is a small hotel, with just 16 rooms, and is on the seventh floor of a fairly nondescript high rise. While this sort of set-up is common in Italy, it is perhaps less so elsewhere. As a result many guests are surprised, when they arrive at the address, that there is no reception on the ground floor. They think they may be at the wrong location. On the positive side the seventh floor location results is some views over the city.
The lift is tiny
Though in a fairly tall apartment complex, guests describe the lift in the building as much too small for its purposes. Aside from claustrophobia issues, it simply couldn't carry enough people per minute, resulting in long waits.
Rooms desperately need refurbishing
The rooms are described as extremely “tired”, and best viewed with the lights turned down, or even switched off. As of late 2015 there were reports of renovations taking place, so guests should check the current status before travelling.
