Lincoln Castle

One of the most imposing sights upon the Lincoln skyline, Lincoln Castle is the city’s undisputed top draw. Tens of thousands of visitors arrive in the city each year to explore the eleventh century castle, which was constructed at the order of none other than William the Conqueror. One of only two castles in the country to feature a pair of mottes (raised earth hills), the historic structure is also one of the best preserved castles in the UK. Take a tour of its walls to see the structure in all its glory, as well as a museum detailing its role as a former prison. Be sure too to check out the Magna Carta, one of only four copies of the historic document still in existence. You’ll find a number of hotels located near the castle, making it easy to arrange your accommodations. Some of these hotels even offer direct views of the eleventh century monument in all its glory.

Lincoln Cathedral

Mere metres from the castle stands another beacon of the city’s past: Lincoln Cathedral. Construction of this impressive structure began in 1088, during the Norman conquest of England and was completed several hundred years later. For a time the cathedral was considered the tallest building not only in England but in the whole world, eclipsing even the Great Pyramid at Giza. Today, without its spire – which collapsed in the sixteenth century – the cathedral might not be as tall as it once was but it’s no less impressive. Visitors can take a tour of the building, including a trip up the tower and onto the roof. One of the most remarkable sights you’ll see though is the library, which is home to some real treasures. As with Lincoln Castle, you’ll find plenty of hotels near to the cathedral.

Exploring the City on Foot

In addition to the castle and cathedral, there are plenty of other historic sites within Lincoln. The best way to see many of these is on foot. All hotels in the city offer quick and easy access to the city centre’s main attractions, which include the Lincoln Medieval Bishop’s Palace. Situated in the Uphill part of the city, in the shadow of the cathedral, these palace ruins date back to 1163. Another popular local landmark is the High Bridge. Almost as old as the Bishop’s Palace, this bridge is one of just three bridges in the country that still has buildings atop of it. Lincoln’s streets are full of even more historic buildings with plenty of character. Why not follow the Roman Trail and take in some of these marvellous sights yourself? Along the way you’ll come across a number of ancient sites that recall the city’s previous life as Lindum Colonia, a Roman settlement. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, the Viking Way also passes through Lincoln, en route from Oakham to the Humber Bridge. It’s unlikely you’ll manage the full 147 miles, but even a short stroll along the trail will serve up some pleasant surprises.

The Museum of Lincolnshire Life is a popular choice with those looking to revisit the region’s past. Nearby Ellis’s Windmill – the only windmill still operable in the city – is also worth a visit. A museum simply called The Collection houses more than two million objects, from ceramics to antique clocks. Meanwhile, Lincoln Performing Arts Centre, located on the campus of the University of Lincoln, is the place to go for everything from ballet and opera to comedy and live music. Speaking of live music, the Engine Shed is one of the most popular venues in the city. It’s within touching distance of many of the city’s hotels too. If you plan on visiting Lincoln in late November/early December, you may be lucky enough to come across its famed Christmas market. Styled after the traditional German Christmas markets, this seasonal market attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Out in the Open
