St. Thomas, A Small Island with Big Heart

Snorkel through the turquoise Caribbean Sea, or rent a boat and explore the waters from behind the captain’s wheel. Explore the island’s rich history by touring historic sites by day, and unwind in the evening to Calypso sounds as you enjoy the tastes of the island. It seems incredible that the vibrant night life, exceptional cuisine, fantastic water sports, and unbeatable land excursions of St. Thomas are packed into an island that’s 32 square miles in size, but you have to see it to believe it.

Arts & Culture

St. Thomas may be known primarily for its pristine beaches, but it’s the island’s rich culture that truly brings it to life. You can explore the magnificent pieces of artwork on display at the island’s premier gallery, Mango Tango, or take your little ones to the Virgin Islands Children’s Museum. There are also many historic places of worship that you can visit on the island, which magnificently juxtapose the modern luxury of its nearby hotels. For one, St. Thomas Reformed Church was originally established in 1660, though the existing building was constructed following a fire in 1806. Located just off Main Street, Frederick Lutheran Church is another place of worship to visit, and its construction dates back to 1793. You can also take in the architectural marvel of St. Thomas Synagogue. This National Historic Landmark is one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere and is marked by unique sand-covered floors. If you find yourself enchanted by the magic of the island, find a handcrafted item to take home with you from the Native Arts & Crafts Cooperative or Tillett Gardens.

Land Adventures

The island has no shortage of private tours, and while many of them can be enjoyed at sea, you might find the land excursions interesting, too. For instance, you can take a journey to see the 99 Steps, which were built into the hill leading up to the Government House with bricks that were once used as a ballast on British and Danish ships. While you’re in the area of Government Hill, you can also stop by Blackbeard’s Castle (also known as Skytsborg Tower), located in the city of Charlotte Amalie. While you’re welcome to discover the island on your own, many of the hotels in St. Thomas offer booking services and will gladly help arrange a guided excursion. David’s Fun Tours, Brenda and Franko’s Fun Tours, and Golden Age Ranch are some of the island’s leading sightseeing groups. Should you wish, you can traverse the island’s hills on a long hike, or get a bird’s eye view of all of St. Thomas’s beaches, restaurants, historic sites, and hotels via the rail tour. Ziplining adventures are also available for the island, though they may be best enjoyed by the thrill-seeking travellers in your party, and are not recommended for the faint of heart!

Aquatic Adventures

Being surrounded on all sides by the “turquoise sea,” St. Tomas is known for its beaches and sea adventures. If you’re interested in spotting some exquisite sea life, head to Coki Beach, which is famous for its snorkelling. Surfers can trek to the northern side of the island towards Hull Bay, which is home to the best conditions when there is a north swell. If lounging beachside is your primary objective for your getaway, book a reservation at one of the hotels near Lindbergh Bay, which is a tranquil spot for a peaceful seaside retreat. When it’s time for some aquatic fun, you can take a ride to Coral World Ocean Park. This unique marine park uses an open-water system to run, in which water from the sea flows freely through each exhibit and back into the ocean. There, you can interact with exotic bird species, stroll through the captivating Butterfly Garden exhibit, and of course, get up-close and personal with sea creatures, including sea lions and turtles. If you’re feeling brave, you can even hop in and swim with them, too! For even more water adventures, stop by Sapphire Beach, where you can enjoy the heart-pounding thrills of water sports like windsurfing and jet skiing.

St. Thomas Dining & Nightlife

The night life is vibrant throughout St. Thomas, and many of the island’s restaurants and bars are home to live music and dancing. From live bands to DJs and steel drum percussionists, there are plenty of entertainers that you can enjoy alongside drinks or dinner. Many of the bars are also located on the water’s edge, so you can enjoy the sounds of the Caribbean as you watch the sun set over the sea. When it comes to dining, your palate will be delighted by the herbs and spices that are masterfully crafted into the unique cuisine of the West Indies. For instance, you can indulge in the popular chicken kebabs seasoned with ginger, cumin, turmeric, and other Indian flavours, or sample one of the island’s signature dishes, kallaloo soup, which blends spinach-like greens with meat or seafood and okra, in the eateries across St. Thomas. The island’s fresh-caught seafood is highlighted in the restaurants of Frenchtown, where fishermen are known for selling their best catches of the day. Charlotte Amalie is known for its casual dining scene, while fine dining can be found at the resorts on the island.
