Acropolis Museum (Athens, Greece)
The New Acropolis Museum is located close to the site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum is an archaeological museum that was founded in 2003 but it did not open to the public until the 21st June 2009. It is generally referred to as the “New” museum to distinguish it from the “Old” Acropolis Museum, established in 1874, which it replaced. The aim of the museum was to provide a home for every artefact that has ever been found on the site. When the concept of this new museum was drafted out in 2003 many of these pieces were in museum collections throughout Greece and also elsewhere in the world, so one of the initial tasks was to locate and document everything. There are around 4,000 different artefacts on display at the new museum which range in date from the Greek Bronze Age through the Roman period and into the Byzantine era. These items are displayed over 14,000 square metres of floor space. The New Acropolis Museum is well served by public transport and can be visited between 8am and 8pm, admission charges can be found on the website.
