Airport Liverpool John Lennon (Liverpool, United Kingdom)
Liverpool Airport is one of the oldest in the UK, having been officially opened in 1933. It was renamed Liverpool John Lennon Airport in 2001 when extensive refurbishment was undertaken, and a statue of Lennon is in the main passenger walkway. It is the first airport in the UK to be named after an individual. The airport now handles more than 5 million passengers a year with scheduled services to 69 UK and Europe destinations. Holiday charter flights increase the traffic in the summer season. Two of Europe’s largest low-cost airlines - easyJet and Ryanair - use Liverpool as a base. Motorway links are close to the airport and regular bus services operate to the centres of Liverpool and Manchester, and surrounding towns. Liverpool city centre is only 7 miles. The terminal provides the usual range of shops, taxis and car hire outlets, as well as a conference centre on site. Wi-fi has recently been introduced throughout. The terminal is often used for art and photography exhibitions. The Friends of Liverpool Airport provide tours of the airport (bookable in advance) which consist of a 45 minute presentation of the history of the airport and a one hour walking tour of the facilities.
