Akshardham Temple (Delhi, India)

The Akshardham Temple is a new temple in southern Delhi which was opened in November 2005. The temple is one of the largest and most intricate ever built and was constructed over just five years by 11,000 volunteers. It was built entirely of white marble and red sandstone, with no steel used at all in the construction. The design is a fusion of several north Indian temple styles. The main building includes 9 ornate domes, 234 ornately carved pillars and 20,000 statues and murtis. Visitors to the temple are welcomed free of charge, though a small fee is charged for the 45 minute IMAX theatre presentation, sound and light show and boat ride.
