Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Tallinn, Estonia)

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the largest Orthodox cathedral in Tallinn and is situated in the centre of the city on the hill of Toompea. It was designed by the famous Russian architect, Mikhail Preobrazhensky and built between 1895 and 1900 in a typical Russian Revival style, at that time Estonia was a part of the Russian Empire. The cathedral opened in April 1900. It was erected in memory of the miraculous escape of the Emperor Alesander III and his family in the railway accident in 1888. During the first independence of Estonia, authorities planned to demolish the cathedral because of ideological and political reasons. It was defended with the help of the world Orthodox community. The cathedral includes five domes and can hold up to 1500 people. The ensemble of church bells consists of 11 bells, the largest of which weights 15 tons. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with mosaics and icons. It is open daily from 8am to 7pm.
