The amphitheatre is a dominant feature in the centre of Arles and the most visited attraction. Built at the end of the 1st century it was designed for public spectacles, and is still in use today for bullfighting and other displays. In the middle ages it was fortified for defence and four towers remain as evidence of this. The galleries and tiers were used for houses and chapels. Although this meant some destruction it also preserved the structure. Two of the original three tiers of seating survive, together with the underground galleries for animals, slaves and machinery. It measured 136m by 107m and the arena area itself 69m by 40m; it could seat 20,000 spectators. The access corridors (““vomitoria””) were designed for the rapid filling up and emptying of the tiers. A climb to the top gives an excellent view of the city, although visitors are warned that the stone steps are rough and uneven. Opening hours are on the website. The amphitheatre together with the many other Roman and medieval remains in Arles form a UNESCO World Heritage site.
