Apartheid Museum (Johannesburg, South Africa)
The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg was established in 2001 to chronicle the history of apartheid in South Africa. The museum uses a multidisciplinary, multimedia approach to present the often painful issues associated with apartheid. It also stresses the efforts of the nation to come to terms with those issues and move forward into the future. Visitors enter the museum by way of the first courtyard, finding stone pillars dedicated to the seven fundamental values incorporated into South Africa’s new constitution: democracy, equality, reconciliation, diversity, responsibility, respect, and freedom. Visitors then proceed through a series of themed exhibits designed to elicit emotional responses to the racial classifications on which apartheid was based, the everyday realities of life under apartheid, and the struggle to replace it with a system that respects all its citizens equally. Visitors may arrange either to join guided tours or to explore the museum on a self-guided basis. Because of the graphic nature of the some exhibits, children under 11 are not admitted.
