Auckland Zoo is located close to the city’s business district, near to Western Springs Park. It was established in 1922 and occupies a 40 acre (16.35 hectare) site. It is operated by the Auckland Zoological Society on behalf of Auckland City Council. Today the zoo provides a home for over 700 animals comprising 117 species. They are arranged loosely by geographic origin and include tigers, elephants and primates, but there is a strong emphasis on native species. The zoo also runs a conservation program for endangered New Zealand species and helps to reintroduce many of them back into their natural habitat. Since the late 1980’s the zoo has closed down many of its old exhibits and gradually replaced these with more modern ones. This included the opening of the world’s first national centre for conservation medicine, which opened in 2007. The zoo is fully accessible to wheelchair users and people with pushchairs and wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available for hire.
