Batasia Loop War Memorial (Darjeeling, India)
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway makes a 360 degree ‘loop’ at Batasia about 5 km from Darjeeling. The purpose of the loop is to lessen the incline that the trains have to climb and the tourist ‘Joy Ride’ services stop at Batasia to allow clients to take photographs of the mountains and view the memorial. Placed in the centre of the loop amongst flower beds and gardens, the Batasia Loop War Memorial commemorates the lives of Gorkha soldiers who died since Indian Independence in 1947 and records their names and the battles and wars in which they were killed. The monument stands on a small mound and has a tall needle-like central stone with a statue of a soldier with his eyes lowered in respect standing next to the needle. Around the base of the mound are recorded the names of the operations in which the Gorkha soldiers served and died. The site can also be accessed by road. A small entry fee applies for those visiting independently or is included in the DHR Joy Ride fees.
