Bay of Islands Vintage Railway (Kawakawa, New Zealand)

The Bay of Islands Vintage railway is of great cultural and historic significance. It is located in Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands, home of the famous Hundertwasser Toilets, and runs trains from Kawakawa Railway Station to the longest curved wooden bridge in the Southern Hemisphere at Taumarere. This railway is the oldest in North Island and also the first to pull a passenger carriage. It is the only working vintage railway in New Zealand that runs along the middle of a state highway and right through the middle of the town. The station itself was built in 1911 and is recognised by the Far North District Council and the Rail Heritage Trust as a place of historical significance. The railway’s star resident is ‘Gabriel’, built in 1927, one of the finest examples of a working steam engine and the only one of its kind in the world. One of the great experiences you can have at the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway is riding a train through the countryside on the former Opua track hauled by one of the fantastic steam and diesel powered locomotives.
