Begijnhof (Bruges, Belgium)

Known as ‘De Wijngaard’ (the Vineyard) the Beguinage of Bruges consists of a group of houses around a small garden. It was founded in 1245 by the Countess of Flanders, Margaretha of Constantinople, daughter of Count Baldwin. Most of the house were built between the 17th and 18th century, some in the 19th century in neo-gothic style. Very few houses date back to the 15th and 16th century. In the left corner behind the garden (nr. 30) we can see the largest house where the ““grad-dame’ lived. The church, originally built in the 13th century, was destroyed by a fire in 1584. It was rebuild again in 1609 and later renovated in late baroque style. In 1937 the beguinage became a monastery for the Benedictine nuns who still live here now. The entrance to the beguinage is through a bridge over the canal. The Begijnhuisje hosts a small museum. It was listed together with other 12 Flemish beguinages as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1998. Opening hours: Monday-Saturday 09:30-12:00 and 13:45-17:00; Sunday 10:45-17:00.
