Bodleian Library (Oxford, United Kingdom)

The Bodleian Library is the main research library of the University of Oxford. It was founded in 1602 and it has roots going even further back. It is thus is one of the oldest libraries in the world, and one of the largest in Britain. The library is principally a working, research library for the University, but parts of it are open to visitors. The library is housed in a group of buildings in the centre of Oxford and in the very middle of the University. The quadrangles can be visited for free, while the interiors of some of the buildings can be visited after purchasing a ticket. The areas open for visitors inlcude University’s oldest teaching room, The Divinity School (built 1427-88). The Old Schools Quadrangle is accessed through the Great Gate, also known as the Tower of the Five Orders (named after the columns of each of the five orders of classical architecture: Doric, Tuscan, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite that adorn its facade). From the Quadrangle there is a door leading to the Divinity School, where all tours start. Exhibition room has free admission and presents displays on various themes from the collections of the library. Opening hours: Monday Friday 9.00 17.00 Saturday 9.00 16.30 Sunday 11.00-17.00
