Bolton Abbey was established in 1151 by Augustinian Monks. It stands besides the River Wharfe on the former estate of the Dukes of Devonshire in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The estate covers 30,000 acres (120 km2) and is now in the hands of a trust. The abbey was abandoned in 1539 after the Dissolution of the Monasteries under the reign of King Henry VIII and today it is in ruin. Adjacent to it there is a church (also 12th century) which has been fully restored and is still used as a parish church. Access to the abbey is from a car park in Bolton Abbey Village (pay and display car park) where there is also a gift shop, licensed café and visitor centre. There is no admission charge to walk around the site but visitors must keep to the designated footpaths. It is accessible at all times.
Bolton Abbey is a top attraction in Skipton, known for its unique features that attract numerous visitors each year.
