The Botanic Gardens in Christchurch were founded in 1863 and occupy a 52 acre (21 hectares) site right in the heart of the city. The gardens were established on the 9th July 1863 by the planting of a single oak tree to commemorate the marriage between Prince Albert and Princes Alexandra of Denmark. The gardens feature several different flower beds and include a Rock Garden, Heather Garden, Rose Garden and a Herb Garden. There is also a Water Garden and a whole selection dedicated to native to plants from New Zealand. The park has good quality footpaths that are suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Facilities include toilets and a children’s playground. Access to the Botanic Gardens in Christchurch is free of charge and they are kept open during daylight hours.
