This Villa is an important Romano-British site. It was probably the home of a prosperous family, as evidenced by the well executed and well preserved floor mosaics for which the Villa is famous. It was in existence by the mid 2nd century AD, suffered a disastrous fire in the 3rd century and fell into decline by the end of the 4th century when the Roman Empire everywhere was being overrun. A visitor centre has been constructed over the remains of the Villa. All 12 ground floor rooms survive and five have mosaic decorations of geometric patterns and scenes depicting Romans deities and legends. Walls up to a metre high still remain and some have fragments of painted floral and woodland scenes. Also on display in the Centre are finds from the excavations, including pottery and jewellery. Outside are remains of farm buildings such as granaries and workers accommodation, including a hypocaust and a well. Although there is no evidence of a garden associated with the Villa, a Roman-style garden has been laid out to show the types of herbs and plants which would have been grown. The Villa is open daily from 9.30am to 5pm. It is closed at Christmas exact dates can be found by phoning. There is a café, open from 10am to 4pm, and a free car park. The grounds are not suitable for visitors with restricted mobility, but the visitor centre is accessible to motorised wheelchairs and non-motorised wheelchairs are available on request. An induction loop is provided for the hearing impaired.
