Cairo International Airport is at Heliopolis, 14 miles north east of Cairo and 25 miles from the pyramids. It has grown from an airforce base to a modern airport with three passenger terminals, the third having opened in 2009, and two runways. With the continuing increase in air traffic, further developments are planned. A third runway is under construction and a five star hotel is planned. 65 airlines use the airport and it handles over 14 million passengers a year. When the developments are completed it will be able to accommodate 20 million passengers. Terminal 1’s upgrade provided a range of shops and services for both passengers and the general public, including free wifi. The airport is linked to the city by a major road, and bus services serve Cairo and other destinations. There are plans to extend the metro to the airport. An internal shuttle bus links the two terminals which are two miles apart.
