Cambridge Corn Exchange (Cambridge, United Kingdom)

The Cambridge Corn Exchange is run by the city council and unlike the other two Cambridge theatres has no direct connection with the University. As the name suggests, the building was indeed a corn exchange, opened in 1875 when the previous building became too small. It was always intended to be also an entertainment venue and concerts, motorshows, boxing and wrestling matches were held. In 1965 corn trading ceased and after a period of neglect the building was refurbished as a theatre and concert hall, and is now one of the largest in the region seating around 1,000. It offers a wide range of entertainments but is particular renowned for its promotion of contemporary music. Famous bands which have performed there include the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Take That, Oasis, Queen. An annual event is the summer musical, with an amateur cast and professional production team.
