Cambridge University Botanic Garden (Cambridge, United Kingdom)

Cambridge University Botanic Garden was established as a teaching resource in 1831 by Professor John Henslow. He had a very modern view that trees were important for the planet, and trees remain the focal point of the Garden, especially the main avenue of ancient cedars, the oldest giant redwoods in Britain and the variants of black pine planted by Henslow to “demonstrate variation within a single species”. This idea was to have an influence on Darwin, one of his students. As well as trees the 40 acre garden displays a diverse range of plants from all over the world, grouped thematically and regionally. Of particular note are the Systematic Beds, part of the original layout, and a “unique” planting of over 80 families of herbaceous plants. Also of interest, given Cambridge’s location, is the recently redeveloped Fen Display which shows the ecology and management of fenland. The Garden is open from 10am daily and closes at 4pm in winter and 6pm in summer. There is a café, shop and picnic area on site and car parking nearby. Guided tours are offered, groups are catered for and courses are organised. There is disabled access. No pets except guide dogs.
