The Canterbury Museum in Christchurch, New Zealand is located right in the heart of the cultural district. The museum was built in 1867 and is housed in a building that was designed by the architect Benjamin Mountfort. The Canterbury Museum houses over 2 million different artefacts that celebrate the natural history and human settlement of the region. It includes displays on the indigenous Maori population, the first European settlers and the exploration of Antarctica. In addition to the permanent displays that are held at the museum there are also regular temporary displays and exhibitions throughout the year. The Canterbury Museum is open daily throughout the year (except Christmas Day) from 9am until 5pm (April – September) and from 9am until 5.30pm (October – March). Admission is free to the main museum, but there are specific charges for some of the exhibitions. Free guided tours are also available.
