Castle William the Conqueror (Falaise, France)

The Chateau Guillaume-le-Conquerant is a typical motte and bailey castle, dating back to the 12th century. It has been extended several times and today has three keeps. Severely destroyed in WW 2 it has seen major refurbishment over the last years and only has opened up for public in 1996. The very modern materials, used to avoid confusion for the visitor which parts were new or old, such as steel, glass and canvas, have caused some controversy. Vistors can expect a non stop audio-visual tour - via individual headsets, lighting effects, images and music, all relating to Norman history. The inner bailey and the lost chapel, a creation made of living vegetables, can be accessed without charge. Wheelchair access for bailey and reception hall only. Opening times: February - December 10 am to 6 pm (7pm in July and August)
