Ceannabeinne Beach (Durness, United Kingdom)

Ceannabeinne Beach, also known as Traigh Allt Chailgeag, is one of 5 beaches close to the village of Durness and the most easterly of these. It is a sandy beach which is just over one mile long and lies in a sheltered cove. It is also the most accessible beach in the region and be can be reached via a short footpath from a car park at the side of the main road. An information board in the car park provides visitors with information about the beach and its associated tale. Its Gaelic names translates roughly into English as the “beach of the burn of the old woman” and refers to a tale of a local woman that fell into the stream that runs through the beach and drowned. According to the tale the stream was swollen due to heavy rain and as the woman tried to collect water she fell. Her body was found washed up on the beach.
