Chatuchak Market (Bangkok, Thailand)
Chatuchak Market is the largest market in Thailand. It is located in the Phahonyothin area of Bangkok and opens every weekend (both Saturday and Sunday), receiving around 300,000 visitors each day. The site covers an area of 1.13 km² and attracts both locals and tourists from many miles around. The range of goods on sale is very wide and includes household items, collectibles, handicrafts and clothing as well as a large number of food products, including live animals. The origins of the market date back to the 1950’s but it has been at its present location only since 1982 when a specific area of the city was set aside for a permanent flea market to commemorate the bi-centenary of Bangkok. The name Chatuchak is taken from the name of a local public park. In June 2008 a complete smoking ban was introduced within the market and smoking in the area is now forbidden.
