Chicago Union Station (Chicago, USA)
Chicago’s Union Station was completed in 1925. Designed by local architect Daniel Burnham, who died before the building works on the station were completed, it is regarded as an outstanding achievement in railroad facility planning. The neoclassical station is the last remaining terminal in Chicago that is still in use and has been designated a Chicago Landmark in the meantime and is also located along the former Historical US Route 66. It’s Great Hall, a Beaux-Arts style waiting room, is a popular local indoor venue. On the lower level visitors can find a food court and shops. The station does not connect to the cities’ rapid transit system EL but many bus lines stop here. Currently it serves all Amtrak intercity trains as well as the Metra commuter lines. Union Station is open daily from 5.30am to 11.59pm, the ticket office is available from 6am to 10pm.
