Built in 1524 by Cardinal Wolsey, to replace the 9th century St. Frideswide’s Monastery, Christ Church is today not only Oxford University’s largest college but also the cathedral church for the Anglican Diocese of Oxford. Visitors are welcome all year, except for Christmas day, to admire the architecture, history and the award winning picture gallery of the college, where there are constant exhibitions and events. A “behind the scenes” tour can be organised by booking a guide in advance. No less than 13 ex-prime ministers have studied here, as well as writers such as W.H. Auden and Lewis Carroll. There are about 600 students in the college today, therefore not all parts of the college can be visited. Many scenes from the Harry Potter films were filmed in different parts of the college. Accompanied by bowler-hatted Custodians, visiting hours are from Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm and on Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. The standard rates are £4.90 for adults and £3.90 for children and students. Free for children under 5.
