Accommodations in Jaipur near City Palace (Jaipur, India)

City Palace (Jaipur, India)

The City Palace in Jaipur has been the family home of the rulers of Jaipur since the early 1800s and today it is one of the major attractions of Rajasthan’s ‘Pink City’. The Palace is an architectural treasure and houses its own museum known officially as the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum (or more widely called simply the City Palace Museum). The museum is home to an eclectic mix of historic artifacts, family items and personal collections of the Maharajas. Highlights of a visit to the City Palace include one of the finest collections of arms and armour in India, the Mubarak Mahal with its collection of costumes and textiles, minature paintings and caligraphy, carpets, musical instruments and assorted arts and crafts. Accomplished local painters of miniatures and other craftsmen use part of the palace as a studio and sell their works to the public. A bizarre highlight of the collection is the pair of giant silver urns which are recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest silver objects and were used by Maharaja Madho Singh to take water to England on his tour of London in 1901. The City Palace is open daily except on public holidays.
