Civita di Bagnoregio (Bagnoregio, Italy)

Civita di Bagnoregio is a small Etruscan village which is located on a rocky outcrop at 443m above sea level and is connected to Bagnoregio by bridge. Originally both were part of a city named Balneum Regis, which means “bath of the king” and although some opinions state that it was named thus by a previous king Desiderious, there is documentary evidence that the name already appears in correspondence from Gregory the Great circa 600. In all likelihood it is a reference to the hot water from the local volcanic thermal springs. Civita dates from approximately 6 B.C and has experienced multiple earthquakes since 1695, resulting in most occupants leaving the village. Visitors can view the valleys formed by the Chiaro and Torbido and also the buildings which include a palace that currently hosts an architectural school.
