Cologne Cathedral (Cologne, Germany)

The Cologne Cathedral is arguably one of the most famous churches in Germany and has been, due to its “outstanding universal value being an exceptional work of human creative genius” added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1996. The cathedral looks back on a long history, it stands on a location that is known to having a place of Christian worship since late Roman days. The first recorded church on the site dates back to Carolingian times and the year 870 but it is believed that there have been many churches in this location, each replaced by a larger and grander one.The building works on the existing cathedral started in 1248 and lasted for more than 600 years, with the cathedral finally being completed in 1880. The works were carried out over several stages and have left the city with what is regarded as an architectural masterpiece. More so it is also seen as a monument to the faith and perseverance of Christianity. The cathedral, its treasure chamber and tower are accessible to visitors, please note that a separate admission fee applies for the tower. It is possible to take a guided tour, these are available in several languages. Please bear in mind that the cathedral is a working church and sightseeing is not permitted and tolerated during times of mass.
