Cologne Zoo is home to over 7,000 different animals comprising of around 700 different species. It includes an award-winning aquarium, which was added in 1971 and is internationally known for its European endangered species programme. The zoo was originally founded in 1860 and covers an area of 20 hectares. Cologne Zoo is especially noted for its collection of primates that was established in 1985 and it participates in an extensive breeding programme that releases many of those animals born here back into the wild. This conservation effort is a joint venture between the zoo and Cologne University. During the Second World War the zoo was almost destroyed and had to close for 2 years. It re-opened to the public in 1947 and since this time it has been expanded. In 2000 a bird and reptile house was added. Cologne Zoo is open daily with the exception of a few public holidays.
