Cragside House was built by Lord Armstrong, inventor and armament manufacturer, as his family home. It perches on a rocky outcrop high above the wooden and moorland estate. The house was the first to be lit by electric lighting, the current generated by water power on the property. It is now a museum of his life and times; the rooms are furnished for the period and there are memorabilia of the royalty and nobility who have stayed there. The gardens are reputed to be amongst the finest Victorian designs in the country with a large rock pool and extensive rhododendron and azalea plantations. The estate also has a restaurant, a cafe and a gift shop. A rewiring programme has been in effect during 2006.
