The monument was set aside during the Calvin Coolidge administration in 1924. It is dedicated to the preservation of a unique volcanic rift zone. Entrance fee is $8 per non commercial vehicle. If viewing by foot, bicycle or motorcycle, the fee is $4 per person. No fee is charged if the loop drive is closed during winter months. The monument is open year round. The visitor center is open daily except for winter holidays. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pets are welcome but must be leashed at all times. They are not allowed on trails or in the visitor center (aid animals excepted). The visitor center and Devil’s Orchard Trail and a portion of Spatter Cones trail are set up for full wheelchair accessibility.
