Derwent Water (Keswick, United Kingdom)

Derwent Water lies to the south of the town of Keswick. Geologically it was formed as part of Bassenthwaite, which lies to the north and to which it is connected by the River Derwent. To the south is Borrowdale. At 4.8km in length and 1.6km in width, it is the third largest body of water in the Lake District. It is surrounded by wooded slopes and fells which include the Brandlehow Woods, owned by the National Trust. Within it are four main islands, also National Trust properties. One of these was the home of St Herbert, a hermit and disciple of St Cuthbert, in the seventh century. Derwent Water has been a source of inspiration for many poets and authors including Wordsworth, Keats and John Ruskin. Boat trips from Keswick make excursions to the islands and stops along the shoreline. The lake is also the site of sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.
