El Santuario de Chimayó, located in the Spanish colonial village of Chimayó, is a church of the Roman Catholic communion dating to the early 19th century. The structure is built of adobe and enclosed by a wall, also built of adobe. The interior includes several items that combine the traditional Spanish folk-art of the American Southwest with religious iconography. El Santuario de Chimayó is an active parish church under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The Santuario is best known as a destination for Holy Week pilgrims, many of whom walk to Chimayó from as far away as Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Pilgrims come in search of healing miracles from the “holy dirt” or “sacred earth” that can be taken for a small round opening–el pocito, or the little well–found in the floor of a small side chamber adjacent to the main chapel. A somewhat larger prayer room contains a varied collection of canes, crutches, photos, and Milagros charms from visitors either seeking or testifying about miracles said to have been facilitated by the sacred soil of the well. The Santuario is the most visited shire in the United States and is often referred to as the Lourdes of America.
