Fishermen's Bastion (Budapest, Hungary)
Halászbástya is a neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque castle-like tower in Budapest. It is known in English as the Fisherman’s Bastion and stands on Castle Hill on the banks of the River Danube. Designed by the architect Frigyes Schulek construction began in 1895 but it was not completed until 1902. Following damage during the Second World War it was extensively restored. The bastion derives its name from a group of fishermen that defended the city from attack during the Middle Ages. The Halászbástya has seven towers as its focal point that represent the seven different Magyar tribes that settled in this region in the year 896AD. Beneath the towers there is a viewing terrace with panoramic views of the city, this terrace has many steps and walkways. It is constructed from white stone and was built purely as a decorative structure and a symbol of the city.
