The Flight 93 National Memorial preserves the site near Somerset where a United Airlines jet crashed into a Pennsylvania field on September 11, 2001. The memorial honours the plane’s passengers, whose actions are believed to have subverted a planned attack by terrorists on Washington, DC. The permanent memorial to Flight 93 was designed by Paul and Milena Murdoch and is currently under construction. Meanwhile, a temporary memorial is open on a year-round basis. Visitors should consult the Flight 93 page of the National Park Services Web site for announcements related to progress on the memorial. Though facilities are limited, the site is open to the public on a year-round basis. Admission is free.
