    Fort de Mont-Dauphin (Mont-Dauphin, France)

Vauban began work on this fortification in 1693 after invasions of the area by the Duke of Savoy. The site chosen was a rocky outcrop at 1050m overlooking the steep valleys of the Guil and Durance. It was both a city, designed to protect a population of up to 3000, and a defensive position. Work went on for almost a century and it resisted attacks right up to World War II when part of it was bombed. Much can still be seen: the church, arsenal, powder stores, barracks and of course the fortified ramparts. Opening hours are listed on the website. Mont-Dauphin is one of a group of Vauban sites which are collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
