Accommodations in Grand Canyon Village near Grand Canyon (Grand Canyon Village, USA)
Grand Canyon (Grand Canyon Village, USA)
The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s great natural wonders. It is not the deepest in the world, but is spectacular for its size and the colours and formations of the rocks. Formed by natural erosion it is 277 miles long and ranges in width from 18 miles to 400 yards where it can be bridged. At its deepest it is 6000 feet, more than a vertical mile. It is now protected by the Grand Canyon National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most visitors view the Canyon by car, from the North Rim or South Rim. The South Rim is recommended; the North Rim is 1000 feet higher and can be snowbound. It is also possible to hike in the Canyon or go down the river by raft or canoe, but these options are not for the casual visitor and require fitness and preparation. There is a fee for entering the National Park. New in 2007 is the Skywalk, a U-shaped glass platform at the Hualapai reservation at the West Rim, which allows visitors to walk out and look down into the Canyon. This requires a separate entrance fee.
