Accommodations in Lefkosia near Great Inn (Lefkosia, Cyprus)
Great Inn (Lefkosia, Cyprus)
The Büyük Han is located in the Northern side of the divided capital Nicosia and dates back to 1572. It was one of the first inns built after the Ottoman invasion of the island and was commissioned by Mustafa Pasha. It served as a safe place to stay for travellers, who arrived by horse, donkey or camel which were all catered for, until it was turned into a prison under the British rule. Later it was also used as a builder’s yard and gave accommodation to families in need. The building is set out on two floors, surrounding a central courtyard which features a small octagonal mosque. In between 1992 and 2002 the former Inn was restored to its former glory and now represents again how a traditional inn would have looked like if you’d visited centuries ago. The Büyük Han is home to a number of art galleries, handicraft shops, souvenir shops and frequently hosts events.
