Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (Mosca, USA)
The Great Sand Dune National Park and Preserve includes forests, lakes and some of the tallest North American dunes and peaks. It is located approximately 56km northeast of Alamosa and is reachable by both U.S. 160 and Colorado 150, as well as Colorado 17 and County Lane 6. The Sand Dune National Park offers a number of hiking opportunities, including the sight of a stream which disappears into the sand. Besides exploring the natural landscape, there are opportunities to indulge in a picnic, fly a kite or attend the talks and film shows provided at the Visitors Centre, which also has a bookstore. Small pets are also welcome. It is possible to do a driving tour if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle and evening slideshows are presented at the Piñon Flats Campground. Availability permitting, it is possible to self-register for a campground site 24 hours a day. Travelling directions and details of the seasonal opening hours are available at the website, as is a listing of available events and programs.
