Great St Mary's (Cambridge, United Kingdom)

Great St Mary’s is known as the University Church. Standing in Cambridge market place, it pre-dates the founding of the university, and the emerging university began to use the church for official purposes. Work on renovating and enlarging the 13th century building was begun in 1478 and continued until the completion of the tower in 1608. A planned 80 foot spire was never added. The tower and belfry are the main attractions. 123 steps lead to the top of the 114 foot high tower from where the visitor can have a fine panorama of the city. The eight bells can be seen at the top of the tower: four of them date from 1515 and the remainder from the 17th century. The bell-ringing team is the oldest in the country, formed in 1724. Entry to the tower is £2.50 although entry to the church is free of charge. Guided tours are available on Saturdays and Mondays during the tourist season: maximum 14 people, £8 per person. This is an Anglican church within the diocese of Ely. It is open every day, and holds services daily. There is a gift shop, and an associated centre provides a café, exhibition and event area.
