Built between 1590 and 1597 Hardwick Hall has been in the care of the National Trust since 1959. It is recognised as one of the best preserved Elizabethan houses in England. The house was built for Bess of Hardwick, the Countess of Shrewsbury and the mother of the Dukes of Devonshire of Chatsworth House. Its history is therefore intertwined with that of both Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, another of Bess’s Houses. Bess of Hardwick was the second wealthiest woman in England (after Queen Elizabeth 1) and Hardwick became a second home for the Dukes of Devonshire. Designed by the architect Robert Smythson it is built in an early Renaissance architectural style and bears the initials “ES” (Elizabeth Shrewsbury) on the outer walls of the stonework. Hardwick Hall is often referred to as the “New Hall” to distinguish it from the nearby “Old Hall” which is in the care of English Heritage. The standard cost of admission to Hardwick Hall and its gardens is: Adult - £9.50 Child - 4.75 Family tickets and group tickets are available.
