Haus des Meeres- Aqua Terra Zoo (Vienna, Austria)

The Haus des Meeres displays both sea creatures and land animals – more than 3,500 in an area covering 6,000 square metres. The central part of the aquarium is housed in a former anti-aircraft tower: it occupies 9 of the floors, of which 5 are given over to displays. The aquarium is divided into themes: the tropical seawater tank with sharks, turtles and coral, the tropical freshwater section including piranhas, and the Mediterranean tank has anemones, crabs, starfish and sea urchins. Outside is a new tropical house, where birds fly and monkeys climb free, and a new crocodile park. The top terrace of the tower has now been opened to visitors and provides a panorama of the city. There is also a shop and a café. The aquarium is open daily from 9am to 6pm, and to 9pm on Thursdays. Further details including ticket prices are on the website.
