Hedingham Castle (Sible Hedingham, United Kingdom)

Built around 1140 by Aubrey de Vere, this Norman keep is one of the finest and best preserved in England. The castle, which measures 110 ft in height and sports 12 ft thick walls, can be reached over a Tudor bridge that spans a dry moat. This bridge was built in 1496 and replaces the original drawbridge. The castle stands in the middle of a large park with a forest and a lake and offers visitors several walks to explore the vast grounds. Picnic tables can be found in the Inner Bailey, a second picnic area is located next to the lake. The castle expands over 4 floors which can be accessed over a very steep and winding medieval staircase. A 28 ft Norman arch, one of the largest in England, spans the Banqueting Hall which is surrounded by the Minstrel’s Gallery from where visitors can enjoy a birds eye view over the hall. The gift shop and tea room are on the first floor, toilets can be found within the Inner Bailey. Please note that due to its architecture neither the castle itself nor the tea room and gift shop are accessible for wheelchair users. Throughout the year there are several medieval themed events being held, please refer to website for dates. Opening times: April to September from 10am 5pm on Sundays. During school holidays Sunday to Thursday 10am -5pm.
